A Stunning Villa In The Heart of Douro: A Review

But wait, have you ever heard of the Douro? Stretching over an impressive 897 kilometers (557 miles), this stunning region is famous for its breathtaking landscapes and world-renowned wines.

Nestled in northern Portugal, the Douro Valley is sprinkled with picturesque towns such as Peso da Régua, Pinhão, and Vila Real, each offering its unique charm and allure.

This rental is available through Flatio, a platform focused on monthly rentals. While some properties on Flatio offer daily rentals, the platform is tailored for people looking for longer-term stays. It’s important to always check the minimum stay requirement on each listing before booking.

In the midst of this enchanting region, you’ll find Alijó. This quaint town, while smaller in scale, is a hidden gem situated about 150 kilometers (approximately 93.6 miles) from Porto. Alijó’s prime location makes it the perfect base to explore the rolling vineyards, indulge in the local gastronomy, and immerse yourself in the culture that makes this area so special.

And that’s exactly what I did. I packed up my husband, cat, and dog, and we spent an unforgettable week in Alijó at this stunning villa in the heart of the Douro.

The House

Pulling up to Casa das Hortênsias, we were immediately struck by its beauty – it’s even more impressive in person than in the photos. The owners, who were incredibly welcoming, have recently renovated the place, and the transformation is remarkable.

One of the first things you’ll notice are the windows. They’re huge, filling the house with natural light while still offering a sense of privacy. It’s a perfect blend of open and intimate.

But let’s dive into the details — Casa das Hortênsias isn’t your typical guest house. It’s a luxurious retreat, complete with a stunning Mediterranean garden – perfect if you want to mix a bit of work with a relaxed family holiday. You’re in for a treat with the sweeping views over the nearby vineyards.

The house itself is a spacious, traditional stone-built farmhouse, stylishly furnished with traditional Portuguese pieces and decorated with themes inspired by Portugal. Every booking gives you exclusive access to the entire house, including the lounge, kitchen, dedicated office, and external areas.

While the space is best suited for two adults — allowing for the best remote working conditions —families with children and pets are welcomed. Plus, there’s private parking in the gated garden, easily accommodating two vehicles.

🐶 This particular rental property is pet-friendly, so you can bring along your furry friend. We ended up bringing our cat AND our dog — and they loved it.

The Amenities

Delving deeper into the comforts of Casa das Hortênsias, the amenities certainly add to the house’s appeal. We’ve covered the convenience of parking, but there are so many other features that added to the experience.

A standout aspect for me was the climate control. In Portugal, houses can often feel chilly, especially in the cooler months, and not all are equipped with central heating. But this place? It has a central heating system. And if you want that extra bit of warmth in your room, there are individual air conditioning units to add that extra bit of warmth.

This additional makes Casa das Hortênsias the perfect location regardless of whether you want to come and visit the Douro in the fall, winter, spring, or summer.

The house has four bathrooms and a fully equipped kitchen. It also has a washing machine, which can be a godsend if you are staying for a longer period of time. There is also a weekly cleaning service.

When we arrived, there was also a welcome basket waiting for us filled with goodies like locally made Port wine, cheese, honey, fruit, juice, milk, tea, and coffee.

The WorkSpace

At Casa das Hortênsias, the upstairs room is perfectly set up for anyone who works remotely. It features two desks, complete with screens and comfortable chairs, and an air conditioning unit to maintain a comfortable temperature.

The internet speed is exceptionally fast, facilitating smooth and efficient work. Additionally, the room offers a stunning view over the vineyards, combining functionality with a touch of natural beauty. This workspace is a practical and pleasant area for getting work done in a peaceful setting.

The Location

The Douro Valley is hands-down one my favourite places in Porto. If you don’t have the time to visit for more than one day, then make sure to take a day trip from Porto.

Casa das Hortênsias is approximately 150 kilometers (93.6 miles) from Porto. In the Douro region, it’s conveniently situated for visiting key locations:

  • Peso da Régua: 30 km (about 18.6 miles) away, a major hub in the Douro wine region.
  • Pinhão: 25 km (around 15.5 miles) distant, known for its scenic beauty and wine estates.
  • Vila Real: 40 km (nearly 24.9 miles) from the house, famous for its baroque architecture.

The property is just 2km from the center of Alijó town, where you’ll find cafes, supermarkets (open 09:00-19:00), and pharmacies. Dining-out options are limited, so be aware that you’ll have to cook most of your meals.

Also, the house is close to Favaios, known for its Moscatel wine, which is a must-visit. But if you don’t like Moscatel, don’t worry as there are many wineries in the vicinity offering wine tastings, perfect for those wanting to explore the rich wine culture of the region.

Plus the hosts will gladly share with you some spots that you should visit during your time in the Douro Valley.

This apartment is available on a website called Flatio. But what is Flatio, you may ask? Flatio is an online rental platform, quite similar to Airbnb but with a focus on monthly and medium-term rentals. It’s popular among digital nomads and those needing furnished accommodations for longer periods.

What sets Flatio apart is that it offers hand-picked, deposit-free, and reasonably priced listings. This includes several locations within Portugal, such as Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve, Madeira, and the Azores. Additionally, Flatio is also present in other European cities like Barcelona, Madrid, Berlin, and Prague.

A key advantage of using Flatio is that it doesn’t require deposits for stays under six months. The lease agreement is handled online, making the process smooth and straightforward. Utilities and Wi-Fi are included in the rent, similar to Airbnb, and some properties even list their internet upload and download speeds, which is particularly useful for remote workers.
