Algarve in November Weather: Uncover the Magic of Portugal’s Sunny Coastline

November is a magical time to visit Portugal’s Algarve coast – the sun still shines, but crowds of summertime tourists have largely disappeared. The Algarve is hands down one of my favorite places to visit.

From discovering vibrant culture and history, tasting mouthwatering cuisine, exploring secret coves with breathtaking views, or soaking up the sunshine on stunning beaches – endless experiences are waiting for you here in one of Europe’s most beautiful regions.

Where is the Algarve?

The Algarve is a region located in the southern part of Portugal, along the country’s Atlantic coast. It is known for its stunning coastline, warm climate, and beautiful beaches, and is a popular tourist destination for visitors from all over the world.

The region is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Serra de Monchique mountain range to the east and is home to several cities. Here are the most popular from west to east:

  • Sagres: a small town known for its dramatic cliffs, rugged coastline, and strong Atlantic winds, Sagres is a popular destination for surfers and outdoor enthusiasts.
  • Lagos: a charming town located on the western coast of the Algarve, known for its historic center, stunning beaches, and clear waters.
  • Portimão: a lively coastal city known for its diverse range of activities and attractions, including water sports, shopping, and dining.

  • Faro: the capital of the Algarve and is a popular tourist destination in its own right, known for its historical center, beautiful beaches, and natural parks.
  • Tavira: a historic town known for its well-preserved medieval center, beautiful beaches, and tranquil atmosphere. It also has a strong ex-pat community.

🚗 Although the distances may seem far, Sagres is only 140km (88 miles) from Tavira. If you’d like to explore the Algarve, we recommend renting a car as it is the easiest way to get around and explore the region. Our recommendation is to use a comparison website like Rentalcars or Discovercars to see what’s available and compare prices between rental companies.

5 November Events in the Algarve

The Algarve is a beautiful place to be in November. There are numerous events and festivals happening throughout the month that make for a lively and enjoyable experience.

1. Feira de São Martinho

One of the most popular events is the Feira de São Martinho (St Martin’s Fair) in Portimão. Held annually in early November (the exact date changes each year), this fair celebrates the arrival of winter with food, wine, music, and traditional Portuguese activities.

⭐ The main day (Saint Martin’s day) is November 11.

The history of the festival dates back to the 11th century—it’s been running for over 1,000 years—when it was celebrated by monks in honor of Saint Martin.

One of the most popular attractions at the Feira de São Martinho is the “ponche de vinho doce,” a sweet wine punch served throughout the festival. In addition to the wine, visitors can enjoy traditional Portuguese dishes like “bacalhau” (salt cod), “enchidos” (Portuguese sausages), and “pastéis de nata” (custard tarts).

The Feira de São Martinho is a fun event for visitors of all ages and is a great opportunity to experience Portuguese culture firsthand. There is no entrance fee. It is free to enter Feira de São Martinho.

2. Feira da Perdiz

If you’re looking for something a little more active, the Feira da Perdiz (partridge fair) in Martim Longo is a great event to attend during the winter months.

This annual event takes place on the second weekend of November and is a celebration of hunting traditions in Portugal. The fair celebrates the town’s history and culture, as well as its unique local traditions. There’s plenty of food and drink to be enjoyed, as well as live music and traditional games.

One of the most popular attractions is the “baptism of the pheasants”, a ceremony in which live pheasants are baptized in a large water tank.

3. Sweet Potato Festival, Aljezur

If you’re in the area at the end of November, don’t miss out on the Sweet Potato Festival in Aljezur. The festival celebrates the sweet potato, a popular crop in the region.

The festival features a variety of activities, including live music, food vendors, and children’s activities. One unique activity at the festival is the sweet potato baking contest. Contestants compete to create the best sweet potato dish using locally sourced ingredients. The festival also features a parade and a street market.

In addition, the festival has a LUZA Lab, a true laboratory for young artists who receive incentives to show their innovative ideas to the world.

One Drawback: Off-Peak Season Closures

While the Algarve region of Portugal is a great destination for food and drink, it’s important to note that not all restaurants and bars may be open during your visit, especially if you’re traveling during the off-season.

In November, many restaurants may be closed. Many businesses don’t update their opening/closing hours on the internet. Instead of looking up hours beforehand, take a stroll around the downtown area of the town you are staying in and pop into a local tasca for a meal. You definitely won’t regret it.
