If you want to get the best information and learn about the charming town of Tomar, then you should start at the Tomar Tourism Office. Here you will find all the information about the different tourist sites and maybe find some that you would have never found by doing your own research.

Along with providing information and maps to all of the major sites in Tomar, you’ll be able to see things like the famous tabuleiros from the Festa dos Tabuleiros, which happens in Tomar every four years.

The office itself is more than just a hub for tourists. It’s a piece of art. Designed by José Vilaça and built in 1933, this building incorporates unique artistic elements from the 15th and 16th centuries, including sculptures, architecture, and tiles from other city buildings.

The Tourism Office is located west of the Nabão River, which runs through the town center. The best part? The staff speaks great English. The office is open from 10 AM to 5 PM daily, making it the perfect place to start your day.

2. Visit the Convent of Christ (Convento de Cristo) Tomar, Portugal

The Convent of Christ in Tomar is a historic site that includes the Templar Castle of Tomar, the Order of Christ convent, and several other important buildings like the Seven Hills Woods, the Immaculate Conception Hermitage, and the Pegões Aqueduct. Founded in 1160, the site originally included a walled village and military facilities.

In 1420, Henry the Navigator, a key figure in Portugal’s Age of Discoveries, converted the military house into a convent for the Order of Christ and used the fortified citadel as his residence. By the early 16th century, King Manuel I expanded the site, adding elaborate decorations that celebrated Portugal’s maritime successes and the Order’s mysticism.

Further developments were made under King John III and King Philip II of Spain (Philip I of Portugal), including adding a large convent, an infirmary, and a pharmacy. The site’s construction spanned several centuries, culminating in a complex that blends power and faith, ultimately earning it a UNESCO World Heritage status.

3. Marvel at The Charola

When I visited the Covent of Christ in Tomar, I expected the usual features but didn’t expect the Charola. Stepping inside, it literally took my breath away. After all my travels, I don’t think I’ve seen anything as stunning. But what exactly is the Charola?

The Charola was the private oratory of the Knights Templar, inspired by Byzantine churches. It features a unique octagonal shape that extends into sixteen sides, creating a circular ambulatory. Originally built in 1190, it faced east until King Manuel I reoriented it south during renovations.

Significant changes came under Infante D. Henrique, who adapted it for the Order of Christ from 1420 to 1460, adding windows and four chapels to accommodate the needs of contemplative friars. Later, King Manuel I expanded the space, integrating it with the new conventual church and enhancing it with a mix of sacred art.

These elements were recently revealed in a restoration project that uncovered original Manueline paintings, hidden since the 1755 earthquake.

4. Stroll through the Old Town

The Old Town of Tomar is one of the best in Portugal. It’s on the river, full of medieval buildings and beautiful architecture. There are plenty of cafeterias here where you can stop and enjoy a tasty pastry and coffee.

If you are wondering where to eat in Tomar Portugal, this is also where some of the best restaurants in the city are located, like the A Brasinha Restaurant and Taverna Antiqua. The restaurants all serve traditional Portuguese cuisine and are just right in the center of Old Town.

Other major landmarks in Old Town are the bell tower of Saint John’s Church and the Ponte Velha, the bridge over the Nabão River.

5. Relax in Mouchão Park

This park is on an island in the Nabão River, making it the perfect spot for relaxing and enjoying the city views. There’s plenty of space at the park to lay out a blanket and have a picnic, walk around it under the shade of the trees, or bring your kids.

You can rent paddle boats, and there is even a mini-zipline that your kids will love.

During the summer, this is a great place to cool down from the intense heat of the Old Town because of its location on the water and shade.

6. Hang out in Praça da República

This is one of the most magical parts of the city. The Praça da República is in the Old Town and is an open town square surrounded by buildings, churches, and statues. In the center of the square is the statue of Gualdim Pais, the founder of Tomar. He was a Knight of the Templar and a grand master, the highest rank of the Templar. 

In the front of the square is the Igreja de São João Baptista, a large church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. In the corner of the square is the Taverna Antiqua, a theme restaurant that recreates life in the ancient ages. Expect delicious food, no electricity (just candles), and lots and lots of mead.

7. Visit the Church of São João Baptista 

As mentioned above, this church is in the city’s main square, Praça da República. It was built in the 15th century and is one of the main sites in Tomar.

It has a large Gothic entrance, but the rest of the church is in the traditional white Portuguese facade. The clock tower attached to the church was built in the 16th century and has paintings under the main clock from Renaissance painter Gregório Lopes.

The church is open from 10 AM–12:30 PM, and 2:30–7:30 PM Tuesday-Saturday and is open from 9 AM–12:30 PM on Sunday and closed on Monday. Entrance into the Church of São João Baptista is free.

8. Walk along Pegões Aqueduct  

The Pegões Aqueduct is about a 40-minute walk from the center of Tomar, or you can take a taxi. You can walk along this 400-year-old aqueduct to get the best views of it and the surrounding hills and greenery. 

At its highest point, the aqueduct is about 30 meters tall, but if you are scared of heights, you can take a path along the bottom of the aqueduct.

The aqueduct, which supplied water to the convent from four different springs, is about 6km long. It’s a beautiful hike and definitely worth adding to your itinerary.

9. Look at Matchboxes at the Museu dos Fósforos

If you are looking for unusual things to do in Tomar, this is it! Believe it or not, this little city in the middle of Portugal is home to Europe’s largest collection of matchboxes.

Over 43,000 matchboxes worldwide are on display here, and you can look at and admire them. Matchboxes from 127 countries are on display, and that number will hopefully continue to grow until all 195 countries are represented.

Some of the oldest matchboxes in the collection are from the 1800s, which feature pin-up girls, architecture, and sports teams and players. The collection is still being added to this day.

It’s open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 AM–12 PM, 2–5 PM, and is closed on Mondays. Also, it’s one of the free things to do in Tomar.

10. Walk Along the Nabão River

Walking along a river is one of my favorite things to do when traveling to a new city. The Nabão River, which is 66 km long, runs right through the center of Tomar. This river offers the city’s best views and is one of the best things to do in Tomar at night or first thing in the morning.

One of the best views along the river is from the Ponte Velha bridge looking towards the old town. There’s also a restaurant adjacent to the old town called Bela Vista which offers great views of the old town and river that you can take in while enjoying a delicious meal.

11. Visit The Oficina de Olaria e Azulejaria, Tomar 

If you want to learn about one of Portugal’s claims to fame, check out the Oficina de Olaria e Azulejaria (or Pottery and Tile Workshop).

This is one of the more unique things to do in Tomar and really lets you see Portuguese culture in action. Here, you can witness the creation of the Azulejo tiles (or Portuguese Tiles). Two local women work here, painting tiles and giving workshops about the tile-making process. If you like their work, you can even order some Azulejos for yourself. 

This office is near the Largo da Várzea Grande and the Igreja do Convento de São Franciso. If you coming to check out the Museu dos Fósforos, it’s just in front of this workshop.

Make sure to swing by this amazing little shop and watch how traditional Portuguese tiles and pottery are made. It is open daily from 10 AM to 6 PM, and entrance is free.

12. Visit the Synagogue-Museum of Tomar 

This Jewish synagogue in the center of Tomar was built in the mid-1400s and was only open until 1496 when the Jewish people were expelled from Portugal.

This is now a beautiful museum dedicated to the Jewish people who were forced to leave their homes and their country. The facade of the building is similar to those in the area, but what sets it apart is the blue Star of David above the entrance. The interior is a rare example of a medieval Jewish temple with pre-Renaissance Portuguese art.

It’s open 10 AM–12 PM and 2–5 PM every day except Mondays, when it’s closed. 💰 Entrance to the synagogue and museum is free.

13. See the Old Mills at Levada de Tomar 

The mills along the Nabão River date from the 13th century and were used by the locals to make flour from grain and press olive oil. The water from the river was used for power, turning the gears of the mills almost like a gas-powered machine. 

The Knights Templar made them, but they are no longer working. They are in a beautiful spot along the river and are worth a visit when you are doing your river walk.

14. Visit the Chapel of Santa Iria 

This 16th-century building is located right on the banks of the Nabão River, opposite the Old Town. The church is dedicated to Saint Iria, who was martyred in ​​the year 653.

It’s said that the governor’s son and the monk in charge of supervising her both fell in love with Iria. After she rejected them both to follow a religious life, the monk gave her an infusion that made her look like she was pregnant. When the governor found out, he sent an assassin to kill her. 

After she was murdered, a miracle took place. Her body was floating down the river, and a tomb appeared that wrapped around her body. There were many who witnessed the miracle, and she was named a saint.

You can visit Tomar to pay your respects to her, and if you are lucky enough to be in Tomar on the 20th of October, you can participate in the Fair of Saint Iria, where a statue of her is paraded around the city.

15. Explore Seven Hills National Forest 

Located just outside of Old Town, the Seven Hills National Forest (or Mata Nacional dos Sete Montes) is one of the most beautiful spots in the city where you’re surrounded by nature and hiking trails. 

The park is clean and the perfect place to spend a morning hiking on well-marked trails. If you are trying to get to the Convent of Christ, I would suggest taking the route through this forest.

🥾 It’s only about a 3km walk there and back through the trees, so unlike the road that you can take from the center of town to get to the convent, it will be shaded the whole time.

16. Admire the Church of Santa Maria do Olival

The Church of Santa Maria do Olival in Tomar, Portugal, is a significant historical site tied to the Knights Templar.

Built-in the 12th century by Gualdim Pais, a leader of the Templars in Portugal, it became the Templars’ burial site. Gualdim Pais himself is buried here, and his tombstone from 1195 is still intact. After the Templars were disbanded, it became the burial site for the Order of Christ, their successors.

The building currently here is a reconstruction of the original church, which was finished in the 13th century. It is known for its simple yet early Gothic architectural style, featuring a rose window and a free-standing bell tower.

17. Take Part In the Festa dos Tabuleiros (Happens Every 4 Years)

If you want to watch one of the most amazing things you’ll ever see, come to Tomar during the Festa dos Tabuleiros. This festival dates back to the 13th century when a miracle took place.

Even though the exact beginnings of the festival are not clearly known, there are two main ideas about how this grand event may have started. Some researchers believe that the festival evolved from ancient pagan festivals dedicated to Ceres, the goddess of agriculture and fertility, reflecting a deep connection to the cycles of nature.

However, others believe that the Festa dos Tabuleiros has strong links to the cult of the Holy Spirit, religious doctrine, and a series of traditions that have been practiced in the Azores and some parts of mainland Portugal for many centuries.

The festival is thought to have been initiated by Queen Saint Isabel of Portugal in the 13th century, who was a devout follower of the cult of the Holy Spirit.

Wondering how to get to Tomar from Lisbon? Here’s how you can get there:

🚌 By Bus

Taking the bus from Lisbon to Tomar is a straightforward and convenient option. Buses depart from the Sete Rios station in Lisbon. The journey typically takes about one and a half hours and drops you off in the center of Tomar, close to the historic sites.

Tickets for the Lisbon to Tomar bus route cost around $13 USD or $18 CAD per person, and they can be purchased either online or directly at the bus station.

🚊 By Train

Traveling from Lisbon to Tomar by train is another great option. Trains leave regularly from Santa Apolónia or Oriente stations in Lisbon. The ride takes about one and a half to two hours. Tomar’s train station is well situated, just a short walk from the town center.

Train tickets cost approximately $14 USD or $19 CAD per person. You can buy tickets online in advance or at the station.

⭐️ I prefer the train as it is straightforward and the train station is close to the Old Town of Tomar.

🚗 By Car

Driving from Lisbon to Tomar offers flexibility and convenience if you can access a car. The drive takes about one and a half hours via the A1 freeway. Driving allows you to explore the scenic route at your own pace and make stops along the way.

However, remember that renting a car might be more expensive than public transport. It’s a good option if you plan to visit other nearby places. There are so many day trip options from Lisbon, so renting a car is a great option if you want to explore outside the city.

3 Things to Pack When Visting Tomar

1. Comfortable Walking Shoes

If you are heading to Portugal, the #1 thing you need to bring is comfortable non-slip shoes. The type of shoes you decide to bring depends on when you are coming and what you plan on doing. Remember, regardless of the season, heels and flip-flops are not the best idea especially if you plan on exploring Tomar on foot.

In terms of shoes, I personally love Birkenstocks and Merrel or Sorel hiking shoes. But I have also heard good things about Teva sandals. For example, these Teva Women’s Hurricane Xlt2 Sandals have over 8,000 reviews and an overall 4.6 rating.

2. A Day Bag

A day bag is a personal preference, but it is a great option if you plan if you plan on spending your day exploring Tomar (especially if you are doing a day trip from Lisbon to Tomar)

I tend to wear day bags for two specific reasons. The first is to fit all my camera gear, including my drone. For these types of trips, I love to bring my Manfrotto backpack that I’ve had for years — yes, it’s sturdy. Other brands I recommend are Nomatic and Lowepro backpacks.

Then there are trips where I’ll bring a day bag filled with a water bottle, a sweater, snacks, and some other nick-nacks. In those cases, I tend to either bring a collapsible day bag or a regular day bag. I’ve recently fallen in love with TropicFeel and all their products.

3. Sunglasses

If you visit Portugal, even in winter, expect to see the sun and lots of it. Given that my eyes are on the sensitive side, I’ve made it a habit to always keep a pair of sunglasses handy in my handbag.
